They’re people who are messy and queer—not messy because they’re queer. With the exception of Netflix’s quietly revelatory Dating Around, many dating shows with LGBTQ (and especially bisexual) contestants have treated them as hypersexual or prurient anomalies, as enigmas who are incapable of settling down. As the sun sets on this series of Love Island, our summer has again been dominated by swimwear-clad singletons forming new connections. For weeks, we’ve seen a conveyor belt of Islanders couple up, break up and, in some cases, make up.
That’s because The Dating Game, which started in 1965, featured many famous people on the show before they became household names. Back in the day you might have seen Farah Fawcett, Steve Martin, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Burt Reynolds, John Ritter and Tom Selleck trying to score a date. The first episode airing on June 14 will see Hannah Brown quiz three singletons as they try to bag a date with the reality star.

In the end, if the men could guess which woman chose him as the “stud” over the other, they won another date. The sexually suggestive talk from the women was scripted, and some male contestants were upset that the show made it seem like sex was had on every date, when that wasn’t the case. But, at least at the outset, Deschanel leans on the irony a little too much. However, there’s a catch — if contestants kiss or have sexual encounters of any kind, money is deducted from the grand prize. For the rest of “Too Hot to Handle,” as they’re monitored by a cone-shaped personal assistant/watchdog called “Lana,” they attempt to form connections (while remaining celibate enough to win). The contestants live together, compete in musical challenges (some with celebrity guest judges like Jason Mraz, Kesha, and Taye Diggs), and go on music-themed dates, all in the hopes of finding a new duet partner.

Now, some celebrities on The Dating Game were already celebrities, doing the show for a bit of publicity — like Maureen McCormick, who appeared on the show in 1973, just days after The Brady Bunch had aired the finale of its fourth season. That’s right — bachelors number 1, 2, and 3 answered questions for the privilege of stepping out on the town with Marcia Brady, America’s favorite TV California blonde. Any variations of “nothing too serious,” for instance, “chill,” “casual,” “no strings attached,” or “here to have fun” are definitely not ideal. The words “average” or “normal” in bios are also concerning, as are the words “masculine” or anyone who solely refers to women as “females.” A few other common red flag words are “discreet,” “lover,” “sensual,” “massage,” and “I’m not like other ___.”
American viewers have also been introduced to foreign reality series, like the popular British dating competition, “Love Island,” which is available on Hulu. Thanks to streaming services, these shows are only the tip of the iceberg.
